A fox follows in the footsteps of an Arctic fox to the far north and discovers the magic of winter.

Winter is late arriving in the ancient forest, so Kajo the fox and Ölli the moth decide to set out in search of it. On their journey north, they encounter reindeer, siberian jays, and ptarmigans, all of whom are also waiting for winter. The landscapes change from forests to vast mires and fells. Far in the north, snow finally begins to fall—so heavily, that Kajo and Ölli become separated in the blizzard. Fortunately, with the help of an Arctic fox from the fells, Kajo finds his friend and gets to experience the dazzling glow of the Northern Lights.

The previous book in the series, Journey to the Heart of the Ancient Forest, was nominated for the Arvid Lydecken Prize. Work on this book was supported by the Kone Foundation and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland in 2024 and 2025.

The illustrations are created with acrylics, gouache nad pencils on paper.

Kunnianosoitus pohjoisen ainutlaatuiselle luonnolle. 

Kettu lähtee naalin jalanjäljissä pohjoiseen ja löytää talven taian. Ikimetsän talvi on myöhässä, ja Kajo-kettu ja Ölli-yökkönen päättävät lähteä talvea vastaan. Matkallaan pohjoiseen he kohtaavat poroja, kuukkeleita ja riekkoja, jotka nekin odottavat talvea. Maisemat vaihtuvat metsistä avariin soihin ja tuntureihin. Kaukana pohjoisessa sataa viimein luntakin, jopa niin paljon, että Kajo ja Ölli eksyvät pyryssä toisistaan. Onneksi tunturien ketun naalin avulla Kajo löytää ystävänsä ja saa kokea revontulten loimun.

Sarjan edellinen kirja Matka ikimetsän sydämeen oli Arvid Lydecken -palkintoehdokas. Kirjan työskentelyä on tukenut Koneen säätiö ja Taiteen edistämiskeskus vuosina 2024 ja 2025.

Kuvitukset on toteutettu akryyleillä, gouacheilla ja värikynillä paperille.
